This short powerful film is a rallying cry for women to become more
aggressive when the issue is their health. The film shows women freeing
themselves from the constraint of being well-behaved patients. They must be
prepared to pester doctors with questions and demands for information.
Dr. Carolyn Collins of the University of Washington acknowledges that the
treatment options are often difficult to assess. Women must equip themselves
with all the information available and vociferously take their cause to
the streets, courtrooms, and legislatures.

sitting, and reclining. Risk factors are reviewed, and the importance of

Reviews a personal series of 124 needle localization breast biopsies
completed in a 22-month period. Twenty percent of these eventually became
a diagnosis of cancer. When the indication for biopsy consisted of
microcalcifications, the cancer incidence was 26%, 13% when a "soft tissue
density" was the indication. On average, 1.16 biopsies were required to
obtain the indicated sample. A ten-step technique to ensure successful and
early needle localization is described in detail.

Alternative Approaches to Breast Imaging: Ultrasound, MR, and
Stereotaxic Imaging [videocassette]. Jackson, Valerie P. et al.;
c1993.

Multi Media WP815 A469 1993

Ultrasound (US) is a useful, adjunctive technique to high-quality
mammography for selected patients. In the first part of this program, the
history, equipment, technique, principles of interpretation, current
limitations, and potential for future research and applications are
discussed.
Breast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging requires a system of hardware and
software improvements. An optimized MR breast imaging protocol is the
most sensitive evaluation of breast parenchyma. MR imaging, however, has
drawbacks. Conventional biopsy techniques cannot be used because lesions
depicted with MR imaging are not delineated with conventional methods.
Until a stereotaxic biopsy method is developed for MR breast imaging, MR
imaging will have a limited clinical role.
In the third part of this program, the general principles of stereotaxic
localization and the equipment and methods used to obtain needle biopsies
of breast lesions are described.

improve the visualization, characterization, and localization of such
mammographic abnormalities. Techniques such as microfocal spot
magnification, spot compression, and angled views are emphasized. Also

dose in mammography: to evaluate the risk to the patient, an important
consideration in benefit-risk analysis of screening of asymptomatic women;

mammographic technology, from its beginning to the present. The second
part reviews the risk factors for breast cancer; trends in incidence,
mortality, and lifetime risk of breast cancer; existing evidence regarding
appropriate intervals for screening; and the efficacy of risk factors for
determining screening intervals. The third part provides an overview of
the anatomy of the breast, the technical aspects of mammography related to
positioning, and the radiographic signs of breast carcinoma. Emphasis is
placed on the microscopic anatomy of the breast and how it relates to
abnormalities detected with mammography, particularly to microcalcifications.
The role of spot compression and magnification in the evaluation of
nodules, areas of distortion, and microcalcifications is discussed.
Emphasis is placed on the correlation between microanatomy of the breast
and mammographic microcalcifications and on the relevance of such findings
in the demonstration of benign and malignant disease.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States.
Based on lifetime probability estimates from the National Cancer
Institute, the risk is one in seven that a woman living in the United
States will develop breast cancer. Although breast cancer typically affects
women, men are at risk too. Techniques of early detection allow physicians
to manage patients when survival rates are highest.
In this program, Dr. Rosenberg discusses identification of patients at
risk for developing breast cancer, reviews the most effective methods and
appropriate timing for screening patients, and describes the symptoms of
breast cancer. She also discusses current efforts in breast cancer prevention,
the various stages of the disease, local and systemic therapies, and prognosis
of patients with breast cancer.
