    • Alternative Approaches to Breast Imaging: Ultrasound, MR, and Stereotaxic Imaging [videocassette]. Jackson, Valerie P. et al.; c1993.
1 videocassette: 82 min., sound, color, 1/2 in.
      Multi Media WP815 A469 1993

Ultrasound (US) is a useful, adjunctive technique to high-quality mammography for selected patients. In the first part of this program, the history, equipment, technique, principles of interpretation, current limitations, and potential for future research and applications are discussed.

Breast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging requires a system of hardware and software improvements. An optimized MR breast imaging protocol is the most sensitive evaluation of breast parenchyma. MR imaging, however, has drawbacks. Conventional biopsy techniques cannot be used because lesions depicted with MR imaging are not delineated with conventional methods. Until a stereotaxic biopsy method is developed for MR breast imaging, MR imaging will have a limited clinical role.

In the third part of this program, the general principles of stereotaxic localization and the equipment and methods used to obtain needle biopsies of breast lesions are described.

      Multi Media WP815 M2655 1992

Breast calcifications and masses are commonly identified on mammograms. The first part of the course is devoted to special techniques used to improve the visualization, characterization, and localization of such mammographic abnormalities. Techniques such as microfocal spot magnification, spot compression, and angled views are emphasized. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States. Based on lifetime probability estimates from the National Cancer Institute, the risk is one in seven that a woman living in the United States will develop breast cancer. Although breast cancer typically affects women, men are at risk too. Techniques of early detection allow physicians to manage patients when survival rates are highest.

In this program, Dr. Rosenberg discusses identification of patients at risk for developing breast cancer, reviews the most effective methods and appropriate timing for screening patients, and describes the symptoms of breast cancer. She also discusses current efforts in breast cancer prevention, the various stages of the disease, local and systemic therapies, and prognosis of patients with breast cancer.
