National Statistical Resources

  • "Advance Data" (National Center for Health Statistics)
    These reports provide early release of data from the National Center for Health Statistics' health and demographic surveys. Many of these releases are followed by detailed reports in the Vital and Health Statistics series.

  • African American Health: MedlinePlus.gov
    The statistics sections has pulled together resources for information on specific diseases in regards to African Americans.

  • AHRQ: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
    Several projects are underway including the Heathcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) & interactive tool for hospital statistics, the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), the Healthcare Informatics Standards, and the HIV & AIDS Cost & Use with an interactive tool for statistics on use of HIV/AIDS resources.
    Some of the reports available under Research Findings will also provide some statistical data. Information on specific nursing research and clinical data is also available.
    Safety Net Monitoring includes baseline data and tools to help monitor the status of local safety nets in providing health care to low-income and other vulnerable populations. (The health care safety net consists of a wide variety of providers delivering care to low-income and other vulnerable populations, including the uninsured and those covered by Medicaid.)

  • Asian-American Health: MedlinePlus.gov
    The statistics sections has pulled together resources for information on specific diseases in regards to Asian Americans.

  • ATSDR: Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
    Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance collects information from 15 state health departments about releases of hazardous substances.
    • HSEES Annual Reports
      Annual reports provides summaries of the data.
    • HazDat: ATSDR's Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database.
      HazDat contains ATSDR data and data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Information System (CERCLIS) database.

  • Bureau of Labor Statistics: Injuries, Illnesses, & Fatalities from the U.S. Department of Labor
    The Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities (IIF) program provides data on illnesses and injuries on the job and data on worker fatalities. Access data via a select list of the most requested and popular IIF statistics or use the links to create a customized table of data.

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), main page
    Features CDC Spotlights - regularly changing topics of interest. A variety of data resources are available.
    • CDC Wonder (Wide-ranging OnLine Data for Epidemiologic Research)
      For a single point of access to a wide variety of reports & numeric public health data, use CDC Wonder. Browse the topics list (i.e., Chronic Diseases, Communicable Diseases, Environmental or Occupational Health, etc.) or use the A - Z index.

      Quick access to statistics on a variety of topics with links provided to more comprehensive data & related topics.

      Specially designed sections on various health topics providing statistics, risk factors, prevention strategies, & CDC programs.
    • National Center for Health Statistics
      For the latest on new CDC data updates, to see what's new in the Information Showcase, access the State tabulated data, or build your own table of health stats.
    • Epi Info
      Using Epi Info, public health and other medical care professionals can develop questionnairs or forms, customize data entry and enter and analyze data.

    • America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being
      Reports for each year back to 1997.
    • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
      The newly released Science Inventory provides access to activities and scientific and technical work products (for example, risk assessments, technical studies and guidance, and research).
      Environmental Data and Tools for Scientific Inquiry link provides additional resources.

    • FEDSTATS
      This is a self-described gateway to statistics from over 100 U.S. Federal agencies with two categories of links, to statistics or to statistical agencies. Browse through topics with the A to Z link or browse the list of agencies with statistical programs or do a search across agency websites.

    • Health and Human Services (HHS)
      The Gateway to data and statisticsis a web-based tool that brings together key health and human services data and statistics. It is designed to complement other government resources such as FirstGov and FedStats. The Gateway covers federal, state and local government sponsored information.
      • Datafinder
        The search tool is a special feature of the website. It leads to web locations which contain statistics and data. Use the categories provided to find topics of interest, search with key words, or search by an organization or survey name.
      • "Shortcuts"
        provides quick links to major HHS surveys & data systems sponsored by Federal agencies.
      • MetaDirectory of HHS data resourcesA comprehensive listing with descriptions of the statistical and surveillance systems supported by HHS agencies.

    • Health Topics A to Z
      Provides a listing topics regarding diseases or statistics available on the CDC Web site.

    • Health, United States with Chartbook on Trends in the Health of Americans
      151 Trend tables on a variety of topics: ambulatory care, determinats of measures of health, inpatient care, national health expenditures, state health expenditures and more. Topics vary every year. Data for each table in the report (for each year back to 1993) are available in an Excel spreadsheet.

    • Healthy People 2010 -- Data Resources
      "The prevention agenda for the Nation" -- in addition to the prevention agenda, data is available on Statics & Surveillance and an interactive database system (DATA2010) which contains the most recent monitoring data for tracking Healthy People 2010.

    • Hispanic-American Health: MedlinePlus.gov
      The statistics sections has pulled together resources for information on specific diseases in regards to Hispanic-Americans.

    • Medical Underserved Areas/Medically Underserved Population (MUA/MUP)
      Maintained by HRSA's Burea of Primary Health Care, search by state or by state & county.

    • Monthly Vital Statistics Report
      Topics covered include live tables, trends in pregnancies & births, mortality, marriages & divorces, and more. (with volume 47 (1998), name changed to National Vital Statistics Reports)

    • MMWR: Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report
      Online version of the print publication focusing on disease surveillance.

    • NCI: National Cancer Institute
      The NCI provides links to the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology & End Results) Program reports and data, NCI Progress Reports, and interactive graphics and maps.

    • National Center for Injury Prevention and Control
      (From the CDC) Makes data available via WISQARS -- Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System, pronounced "whiskers" -- an interactive database system, that provides injury-related mortality data useful for research and for making informed public health decisions. Three section are available:

    • National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology (NICHSR)
      NLM meta-site for: Associations, Data Sets & Sources, Federal Agencies, Epidemiology & Health Stats, Evidence Based Medicine & Health Technology Assessment, Funding, Health Economics & Policy, Informatics, Rural Health, and State Health

    • National Safety Council
      The Research &Statistics section makes selected information from the annual compilation Injury Facts available online.

    • Native American Health: MedlinePlus.gov
      The statistics sections has pulled together resources for information on specific diseases in regards to Native Americans.

    • National Vital Statistics Reports
      Online version of the print title. Topics covered include life tables, trends in pregnancies & births, mortality, marriages & divorces, and more. (Prior to volume 48 (1999), name was Monthly Vital Statistics Report.)

    • PeriStats (March of Dimes)
      Developed by the March of Dimes (in collaboration with NLM, NIH & NY Academy of Medicine) PeriStats provides free access to US, state, city, and county maternal & infant health data with over 60,000 graphs, maps and tables available! Create customized charts or maps based upon indicators you select.

    • Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce
      A collaboration of U.S. government agencies, public health organizations and health sciences libraries with a mission to link the Public Health Workforce to Information for Improved Practice. Statistical resources includes their Health Data tools & Datasets.

    • Social Security Statistical Tables
      Include statistics on insured workers, population in the Social Security area, and disabled worker beneficiary.

    • Social Statistics Briefing Room
      Links to CDC data on vital statistics, health behavior and health care utilization.
      • Vital Statisticsis based on vital records filed in State vital registration offices and provides data on births (including selected maternal and infant risk factors), deaths (including infant deaths and deaths from specific diseases), fetal deaths, marriages, and divorces.
      • Data from periodic surveys provide additional resources. The National Survey of Family Growth has data on family formation, growth and dissolution, infertility, contraception, risk factors, and family size, the National Mortality Followback Survey has data on use of health services, living arrangements, health status, and risk factors, collected from next-of-kin of a sample of recent decedents, and the National Maternal and Infant Health Survey has data on maternal and infant use of health services and maternal and infant risk factors from a sample of women with recent births, infant deaths, and fetal deaths.

    • Statistical Abstract of the United States
      Contains a collection of statistics (at the county, state, & country level) on social and economic conditions in the United States. Selected international data are also included. It also highlights sources of other data from the Census Bureau, other Federal agencies, and private organizations.

    • U.S. Census Bureau
      Includes the decennial census data & specialized surveys' data on population, housing, state and local area profiles. Recently, select files of historical census data (back to the first census in 1790) have been made available in PDF format.
      • American Community Survey (ACS) (yearly) is a new nationwide survey designed to provide estimates of demographic, housing, social, and economic characteristics every year for all states, as well as for all cities, counties, metropolitan areas, and population groups of 65,000 people or more.

      • The International Programs Center provides some non-U.S. demographic and socioeconomic data.

    • Vital Statistics of the United States
      Vital Statistics reports include vital statistics data, including natality, mortality, marriage and divorce.

    • Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System
      A special CDC project through Adolescent & School Health. Much of the results reported in MMWR, and special files available at this site.

    State of Illinois Statistical Resources

    • Center for Rural Health (From Illinois Department of Public Health)
      Provides a table listing areas of Illinois having state physicianand/or Federal health professional shortage areas.

    • Illinois Compiled Statutes
      The Illinois Compiled Statutes (ILCS) are a cumulative organization of Public Acts. Most, but not all, Public Acts are incorporated into ILCS. The following chapters are the most applicable: Health & Safety CH. 405 - MENTAL HEALTH, & CH. 410 - PUBLIC HEALTH; Human Needs CH. 305 - PUBLIC AID, CH. 310 - HOUSING, CH. 315 - URBAN PROBLEMS, & CH. 320 - AGING.

    • IllinoisData.com
      Covers northern Illinois regions including the Chicago, Kankakee, Rockford, and Quad Cities metro areas, and provides current and historical demographic and economic statistics.

    • Illinois Department of Public Health
      • Health Statistics page provides information on vital statistics (births, deaths, marriage & divorce, and abortion), population statistics, disease statistics (STDs, infectious & HIV/AIDS),and available data systems (Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance, EMS, & epidemiologic studies).
      • Illinois Project for Local Assessment of Needs (IPLAN) a regularly performed community health assessment and planning process in Illinois.
      • An online website, IPLAN Data System, has been created based on this data and offers a customizeable data report system containing 102 health indicators.

    • Illinois Report
      A comprehensive compilation of economic and demographic data relating to Illinois and to political subdivisions within the state. Topics include Population, Housing, Health & Vital Stats, Education, Labor Force & Employment Stats, Income, and more.

    • Local Health Departments
      Alphabetic Listing of Illinois Health Departments

    • State Health Facts Online
      A versitile site from the Kaiser Family Fountation that allows comparisions of the 50 U.S. states plus U.S. territories in a variety of demographic categories, health status, health coverage, etc. Minority & Women's health are also special topics. Information can be displayed as bar graphs, tables, or color-coded maps. States can be compared to the national average or to all states.

    International Statistical Resources

    • International Goverment Agencies Links
      UC San Francisco provides links to international government organizations and agencies. The site is an extensive resource for Epidemiology and Biostatistics resources.

    • International Programs Center at the U.S. Census Bureau
      The International Programs Center (IPC), part of the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, conducts demographic and socioeconomic studies around the world.

    • Pan American Health Organization Data Sets
      Many of their resources simply link to documents, etc. they produced, however, this organization makes a couple of statistical sources available.

    • Statistical Abstract of the United States
      While the focus of this data collection is the U.S., selected international data are also included along with the national data.

    • United Nations Statistics Division
      The Statistics Division compiles statistics from many international sources and produces global updates. Unrestricted free access is provided to selected global datasets, such as the Millennium Indicators Database, which presents 48 social and economic indicators and related series by country and year since 1985, and the Social Indicators data set which includes tables with social indicators covering a range of topics such as education, housing, health, water, etc.

    • World Health Organization
      • WHOSIS: WHO Statistical Information System
        A guide to health and health-related epidemiological and statistical information available from the World Health Organization. Resources include: Burden of Disease stats, WHO Martality, Stats by disease or condition, Evidence for Health Policy, Maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS Global data, and more.
      • WHO Research Tools
        Provides quick access to a variety of topical databases - i.e., mortality, burden of diseases, health personnel, & etc.
      • WHO World Health Reports
        WHO published yearly reports on member nations (online access is back to 1995). Each report has a specific focus, but usually provide a variety of data information.

    • ASTHO: Association of State and Territorial Health Officials
      A national nonprofit organization representing the state and territorial public health agencies of the United States, the U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia.

    • Children's Environmental Health Network
      Provides a variety of resources including organizations that are involved in children's environmental health, look for a specific activity or project, search for information on a toxicant or an exposure route, review available information sources and more.

    • EnviRN, from University of Marlyand
      EnviR.N. is dedicated to supporting nursing professionals seeking accurate, timely and credible scientific information on environmental health and nursing. Several resources are available: Nursing Interventions that provides assesments, interventions, and evaulations based upon the IOM's report onNursing, Health and Environment, and also lists graduate projects and case studies; the list of Hazards A-Z which provides information and links for specific topics; and the Resources Gateway that provides links from agencies & regulations, to slides/audio/video & education resources, to patient education.

    • Healthy People
      "The prevention agenda for the Nation", it is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats.

      Health & Outcomes Measurement Instruments

    • KaiserEDU
      Developed by the Kaiser Family Foundation, for Health Policy students and faculty to easily access data, literature, news and developments regarding major health policy topics and debates. A Reference Library provides background information on broad health policy topics. The Issue Modules focus on specific policy issues with key data, relevant reports, and more. The tutorials are multimedia presentations on health policy issues, research methodology or the workings of government.

    • NACCHO: National Association of County and City Health Officials
      NACCHO provides education, information, research, and technical assistance to local health departments and facilitates partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies in order to promote and strengthen public health. One resource is MAPP - Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships a tool designed to help communities improve health and quality of life through community-wide strategic planning.
