Library of the Health Sciences - RockfordComputer LabsThe Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine at Rockford offers faculty, staff, and students access to microcomputing and the Internet in two on-site computer labs. The Library Computer Lab is open during library hours. This lab offers both Macintosh and IBM-compatibles, color printers, and a scanner. It provides access to word processing packages, spreadsheet and statistical software, studyware programs, and the Academic Data Network (ADN). The ADN allows UIC affiliates to connect to the various mainframe and UNIX computers in Chicago and provides access to the Internet and the World Wide Web. University of Illinois faculty, staff, and students may reserve any one of the available computers either in person at the circulation desk or by phone (815-395-5650). The computer can be reserved in two-hour blocks or less. Each reservation is held for 15 minutes after stated time, and then will become available for walk-ins. The Key-Card Microcomputer Lab, located in room E-220 near the auditorium, offers building hours access to many of the same programs and Internet options as the Library Computer Lab. This lab houses ten PC compatibles and two printers. This Lab is controlled by a key-card system, but may be reserved by faculty for classes. All computers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis to faculty, staff, and students who possess a key card. If you are interested in purchasing a key-card, contact Physical Plant at 395-5830. Help is provided in the Library Computer Lab by library staff Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Manuals, guides, and tutorials are available. Limited help is available in the Key-Card Lab during these hours. Please do not bring food or drink into the lab at any time. If a computer or printer is damaged by spilled food or drink, it may be unavailable for a considerable length of time. Help us avoid these problems. A complete list of software is available at the front desk of the library and is posted in each lab. Please bring your own floppy disks if you want to save data. Do not load your own software or leave files on the computers. Unauthorized software and personal files will be erased regularly. You will be warned that closing time is approaching, but please plan ahead and do not ask to remain after closing time to finish anything. Let us know if you have any suggestions for either lab, especially for software that you have tried and feel would be useful as study software for the students. Faculty sponsorship is usually required for the purchase of software.
