Mediated Searching

The University Library subscribes to a number of online databases which users can search on their own either at the library or from home. Staff in the Information Services Department will perform mediated online searching for users who prefer to have a search done by a trained professional. To request this service, contact the library at 815-395-5650 or e-mail lib-rref@uic.edu.

Fees: The basic fee for a mediated search for UIC faculty, students, staff, alumni association members and corporate members is $10; for non-affiliated users, the fee is $25. If users are requesting searches from fee-based vendors the actual charges of the search will be passed on to the user. Turnaround time for delivery of a search is usually 2-3 days, depending on the complexity of the search.

Instructional Services

Information Services staff provide instruction about library and information resources in a number of ways, including:

  • Guides for locating journal articles or books and other materials and general "self-help" sheets are located in the vertical file adjacent to the entrance to the Circulation area.
  • One-on-one instruction is provided during the times reference staff are available.
  • Private or group instruction may be arranged by appointment.
  • Informal classes on current topics, e.g. accessing full-text journal articles, are offered each semester. Any faculty, staff, or student may register for these classes.
  • Curriculum integrated classes may be arranged by faculty.
