Medical Ethics
This page is intended to serve as a guide to selected resources on
medical ethics. The first listings on this page are databases to which the UIC Library
subscribes. These can be accessed by anyone from within the Library of the Health
Sciences (LHS) or elsewhere on the UIC campus. Access from other locations is
limited to UIC students, faculty, and staff who have a valid netID and password.
A link to freely available Web sources is also included, as are journals and books
in the LHS collection. Note that some journals and books are available in online,
full-text format to UIC users. This is not a comprehensive listing. For further
assistance please contact the
Information Services desk.
Databases
-
National Library of
Medicine (NLM) Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Database
The MeSH database allows you to search for the "official" term(s) that the National Library of
Medicine uses to describe concepts within the broad area of bioethics. Finding these official
terms makes it easier and more productive to search
PubMed,
the database of medical journal articles maintained by the National Library of Medicine.
Access to PubMed is free, but UIC patrons can search a
version of PubMed
that contains links to UIC's full-text e-journals. Because bioethics is a popular
topic for PubMed searches, NLM staff have created a bioethics subset within which you can search.
To do this, enter PubMed, click on "limits," then select "bioethics" from the "subsets" pull-down
menu before constructing the rest of your search. If you're curious about what's included in
the bioethics subset, you can get more details
here.

John W. Freeman, Kevin McDonnell

W50 F855t 2001
This book attempts to place the reader in the midst of difficult ethical situations
complicated by time pressure and lack of complete information. The first 16
chapters present medical cases that are amalgams of actual cases, chosen for their
drama and covering the life cycle. Readers are given a chance to make decisions at
critical points in the narrative; they are then presented with possible outcomes for
the decision they made. The purpose of the book is to provide insight into the
medical decision-making process. The last chapter presents the authors' process
approach to making ethical decisions.
