Current Awareness Services and Saved Searches
Saved Searches
The following is a list of online services that perform searches of
databases on a regular basis and produce a report for users. You may
find these services useful if you periodically perform the same search, or
if you would like to be notified of new articles in your field of
interest. Certain databases may be restricted to UIC users.
Services which search PubMed/MEDLINE
PubMed PubMed offers a
My NCBI (formerly called Cubby) feature to store search
strategies.
PubCrawler
PubCrawler is a free "alerting" service that scans daily updates to the
MEDLINE (PubMed) and GenBank databases. The results are presented as an
HTML Web page or you can receive them via e-mail.
BioMail
BioMail regularly searches MEDLINE through PubMed and e-mails results to
users.
Other Article Index Databases
These services allow you to run a search repeatedly in online article
indexes to find citations on a specific topic.
OVID Databases
Multiple databases are available through the OVID search interface.
These include: AARP AGELINE; CINAHL; EBM Reviews; ERIC;
Health and Psychosocial Instruments; International Pharmaceutical
Abstracts; MEDLINE; and PsycINFO.
To set up a saved search for an OVID database, follow the instructions
below:
- After a search has been done in OVID - users can opt to store searches
and have results automatically emailed. Perform your search as normal in
the OVID Database that you select. When you are finished entering in the
search strategy that you would like to save, click on "Save Search /
Alert" link. NOTE: although your entire search history will be
saved you will only get results on the basis of what is in the last line
of your search history.
- Enter in your user name and password that you have created. If you
have not created one, you may do so at this point.
- Enter in a name for the search and under TYPE, select "permanent" if
you want to log in to run the search or select "AutoAlert SDI" if you want
to receive regular emails of new citations. If you select Auto Alert SDI
you must also enter your email address and indicate the frequency that you
would like the alerts.
Web of Knowledge Web of Knowledge offers the option to save
a search in any of its databases. These databases include Web of
Science (Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index,
and Arts & Humanities Citation Index), Biological Abstracts, and
Current Contents. UIC users have the option of setting up a search
that is run on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The results are then
emailed to you. You can also establish a Cited Articles search so that
you are notified whenever your own publications are cited by someone else.
Additionally, users can create a table of contents alert for their
favorite journals.
You can find more information about this by selecting the HELP option
near the top of the main Web of Knowledge page. To register for this
service please see the
ISI New User Registration .
EMBASE
The EMBASE database also offers options to save searches and to receive
