Searching Databases: Using Subject Headings

Many times databases try to map your search terms to subject headings.

Because each article in these databases has been assigned subject headings that best
describe the article's contents, using subject headings is helpful because it helps you
find articles that are truly about your topic---not just articles that mention your topic.

  1. In Medline (PubMed), the subject headings are called
Medical Subject Headings or MeSH terms.

    • In PubMed, use the MeSH Database to map to MeSH terms.
  2. In the CINAHL database the term is Subject Headings.

Terms will automatically "map" to the CINAHL subject headings if the box next to "Map Term to Subject Heading" is checked.
