GUIDE TO LIBRARY SERVICES FOR VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES
UIC is committed to providing equitable access in order to insure that all
library users can fully and efficiently fulfill their research needs.
Building Layout
The Library of the Health Sciences-Urbana is located in the Medical Sciences Building
at 506 S. Mathews, Urbana. The Library has two floors. Located on the lower floor are the circulation and
reference service desks. Also on the lower floor are the computer workstations, photocopiers, study carrels,
reference collection, new bookshelf, slide collection, bound journal collection, and recently received issues
of journals. On the upper floor are study spaces, AV rooms, the AV collection, retrospective journal collection
and the book stacks. The Library does not have an internal elevator. Elevator access to the 2nd floor of the
library can be arranged with library staff. Library staff will accompany visitors upstairs using elevators
elsewhere in the building, to open the secure doors to the library and be of assistance for any other needs.
Restrooms are located outside of the library in the main building and are handicapped accessible.
Services
Staff at the Library of the Health Sciences-Urbana are ready and willing to assist
patrons so that all users can complete their research needs. Staff will:
-
Retrieve Library Materials: Library staff retrieve books and journals from the stacks and
coordinate photocopying of materials for patrons with disabilities. To make arrangements, see staff in
person at the Circulation or Reference Desk, or
contact
them by phone or e-mail. Library staff will make every effort to retrieve items at the time they are requested.
Turnaround time may vary depending upon the complexity and volume of a request. However, delivery usually occurs
within the same or next working day.
-
Provide Research Assistance: Staff are available to provide basic research
assistance during posted reference hours. Users can also arrange an individual appointment
with a librarian for in-depth research assistance. Contact the Information Services Department.
-
Photocopy: Users with disabilities can opt to have copies made for them by
library staff at no additional cost (fifteen cents per page, nine cents with copy card).
