The Library of the Health Sciences-Urbana (LHS-U) is pleased to offer electronic reserves (ERes) for College
of Medicine and College of Nursing students and faculty. ERes allows access to digitized reserve materials
online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer with an Internet connection. Materials processed
through the ERes system are password protected and made available only to students enrolled in the courses.
Unlike traditional print reserves, more than one student may access the material at a time. ERes provides
fast, easy, and continuous access to reserve materials.
The UIC Library of the Health Sciences-Urbana also provides easier negotiation for instructors through the
copyright approval process. Instructors may submit their materials to the Library with the assurance that
their documents will be posted electronically within accepted fair use copyright standards. In addition,
instructors may fax documents directly into the server and provide course readings in digital format with much
smaller file sizes than those created by traditional scanning methods.
Materials appropriate for the Electronic Reserve service include:
- lecture notes
- sample exams
- government publications
- single articles from a journal issue
- a chapter from a book
- digitized graphics
- image files
- etc.
The ERes system provides for the use of a variety of file types for electronic access, such as:
- MS-Word
- PDF
- Power Point presentations
- wave
- audio and video files
The ease and convenience of faxing materials into the system, secure password-protected course sites, and
copyright processing make the Library's ERes service an effective alternative for providing course
readings.
