The Special Collections Department at the Richard J. Daley Library announces that a finding aid is now available for the Eri Baker Hulbert III Papers (1934-1965). Eri Hulbert (1905-1955) was a great-nephew of Jane Addams. He spent several years as a resident of Hull-House and was an active participant in and later drama director of its theater programs. Hulbert had an active and varied career as teacher, social worker, and activist. In the years preceding his death, (1949-1955) Hulbert was the Director of the Near West Side Planning Board.
Comprising one linear foot, the papers are divided into two series. The first series consists of correspondence and legal documents chronicling the death of Jane Addams and the struggle of her heirs (with Eri Hulbert as the Linn family representative,) to determine how the copyright percentages should be divided among themselves and subsequently to persuade others that they had the authority to authorize a dramatization of Jane Addams' life and the work of Hull-House. The second series (folders 37-53) consists of material documenting the struggle of the Near West Side Hull-House neighborhood to preserve their neighborhood and, by the late 1950s, to keep the area from being taken over by the University of Illinois. Its materials include meeting proceedings, informational material, Eri Hulbert memorial booklet, newspaper clippings, fact sheets, position papers, and correspondence.
