Archives Week is a national event endorsed by the Society of American Archivists and led by archivists and librarians who collect, organize and preserve the primary sources of history: letters, photographs, manuscripts, records, notes, audio and video tapes, memorabilia, and other materials. The Chicago Area Archivists designated October 12-18, 2003 as the week to showcase archives in the metropolitan area.
On the UIC campus, University Archives will conduct two presentations to familiarize UIC faculty and staff with the University Archives, its holdings, and how to determine if your old files should be deposited in the University Archives. Following each presentation, participants will view a display of selected items from the archives and are invited to tour of the department.
Please contact Doug Bicknese to reserve a space at
either of these sessions. Reservations are preferred, but not mandatory.
The University Archives is the official depository for records with permanent historical value from the University of Illinois at Chicago and includes over 4,000 linear feet of material from the establishment of the Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1859 to the present day. In addition to the records of the colleges, departments, and campus units at UIC, the University Archives also includes selected professional and personal manuscripts of faculty, staff, students, and alumni that were given to the University for preservation and use.
Additionally, the University Archives works with campus units to identify historical records and to develop record management programs in accordance with the University of Illinois Records Management Program, the General Rules Concerning University Organization and Procedure, and the Illinois State Records Act.
