UIC Library Opens Papers of Noted Chicago Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz
The UIC Library announces the availability of the papers of Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz in the Special Collections Department of the Richard J. Daley Library. Judge Marovitz was a prominent public figure in Chicago throughout the 20th century.
After graduating from Chicago-Kent Law School, he was an assistant state's attorney before going into private practice with his two brothers in 1933. Marovitz was Illinois' first Jewish state senator, serving with fellow freshman Richard J. Daley.
After his tenure in the Senate he was a Cook County Superior Court judge, including a term as chief judge. He was named to the federal district court in Chicago by President John F. Kennedy, the last judge Kennedy nominated.
Marovitz assumed senior status on the federal bench in 1975. He continued to serve until his death in 2001 at age 95.
The Marovitz materials donated to UIC represent 25 linear feet of personal papers, government documents, correspondence, photographs and other materials dating from 1925 through 2001.
