University of Illinois Press Books on African American Studies Showcased

African American studies is the featured theme of the Daley Library's new exhibit in its series celebrating the Year of the University Press. University of Illinois Press titles are displayed on the Library's first and second floors through July.

Highlighted books include:

  • The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings, by William Brashler, part of the Lawrence J. Gutter Collection of Chicagoana held by the Daley Library Special Collections Department. The Gutter Collection's 9,000 items comprise 19th century Chicago imprints, books by Chicago authors and works about Chicago, correspondence of prominent Chicagoans, and 19th century maps of Chicago and Illinois.
  • Chicago Soul, by Robert Pruter, recipient of the Certificate of Excellence, Book Category, from the Illinois State Historical Society and winner of the 1992 Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) Award for Excellence for Best Research of Record Labels or Manufacturers.
  • Rap Music and Street Consciousness, by Cheryl L. Keyes. The first musicological history of rap, this book was chosen as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine (January 2004).

Established in 1918, the University of Illinois Press is one of the country's largest and most distinguished university presses. Headquartered in Champaign, it publishes about 120 books each year, as well as 26 journals.

The Association of American University Presses, to which the University of Illinois Press belongs, and the Association of Research Libraries, to which the UIC Library belongs, have joined to sponsor this yearlong celebration of university presses.

Look for changing displays through 2004 at the Daley Library!
