Access Full-Text Articles from the New York Times from 1851 to the Present
UIC Library users now have online access to more than 150 years of articles, images, cartoons, advertisements, and editorials from the New York Times. The Library recently purchased access to the complete run of the New York Times through two electronic databases: ProQuest Historical Newspapers provides access to content from 1851-2001 and NewsBank Newspapers: Access World News provides access to content from 2000 to present. These resources greatly expand access to the historical record provided by the Library.
To access the New York Times from the UIC Library home page, select "Electronic Journals" from the QUICKLINKS/ShortCuts drop-down menu, click on Go! and enter "New York Times" in the search box. You may also find the New York Times in UICCAT by entering a Start of Magazine/Journal Title search. The electronic version of the newspaper is entitled New York Times on the Web and has a blue "
" next to it.
ProQuest Historical Newspapers is a fully searchable archive containing
articles and images from all dates and sections of the New York Times in
PDF format. By using the "More Search Options" button on the "Basic Search" or "Advanced Search" screens, you may limit your search by article type (e.g. "Editorial Article," "Editorial Cartoon," "Obituary," "Review,"
"Stock Quote" and more). Search results can be sorted by "oldest (historical) articles first," "most recent articles first," or "most relevant articles first."
Articles from 2002 to the present must be accessed through NewsBank Newspapers: Access World News, which provides the text of articles
in html format. Users may also access text from the New York Times Book
Review and the New York Times Magazine from 2000 to the present via
America's Newspapers.
If you have questions about accessing the New York Times or other library resources, please use the Ask A Librarian service to send a question via email or chat. Reference desk hours and telephone numbers are available at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/digital/callreferencedesk.shtml.
On-campus users, including those dialing in to UIC modems, will be able to click on the links and be connected to ProQuest Historical Newspapers and NewsBank Newspapers: Access World News automatically; users accessing from off-campus computers will be prompted for their netid and common password.
