The UIC Library has made its first library materials purchase with income from the Sharon A. Hogan Library Endowment Fund. The Library will acquire additional segments of the Arts and Sciences Collections of the JSTOR electronic archive of scholarly journals.
The JSTOR database contains digitized versions of the core journals in the arts, humanities and social sciences, starting with the first issues of these periodicals. The collection is especially useful for the UIC Library (which was established as the library for the University of Illinois Undergraduate Division at Navy Pier, Chicago, in 1947), because many of the journals began publishing in the 1800s. Access to JSTOR's Arts and Sciences Collections enables faculty, students and researchers to search for, read, or print articles from more than 600 journals using any networked computer.
Sharon Hogan was University Librarian from 1990 until her death in 2002. She was a dynamic leader in the library as well as on campus-wide issues relating to computing, telecommunications, information systems, and intellectual property. During her tenure at UIC, the Library began to expand access to electronic resources, including subscribing to some of the JSTOR segments issued earlier. The Library now provides access to more than 10,000 electronic resources.
The Sharon A. Hogan Library Endowment, established with Ms. Hogan's estate gift and memorial gifts, can be used to purchase materials for the University Library.
