The University of Illinois at Chicago Library presents its 2005 Nakata
Lecture, “Universities and the Ecology of Scholarly Publication,”
featuring R. Michael Tanner, UIC Provost, on April
26. Dr. Tanner will discuss the distribution, pricing and control of
information in scholarly publishing; a panel of faculty members will
respond from the perspectives of their disciplines. The event is
scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, 3:00 p.m 6:00 p.m., in the Cardinal
Room of Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted.
Dr. Tanner’s remarks center on the fact that scholarly journal prices
continue to climb even though publishers’ costs have been reduced by
new technologies. Faculty supply research content and the services of
editing and peer-review for publishers; then universities are forced to
buy back the information with restrictive licenses and limited periods
of access, forfeiting fair use and author’s rights. However, faculty
are in a position to change this by exerting control over the process
of scholarly publishing, creating new distribution models, and
retaining their intellectual property rights.
The faculty panel respondents are Daniel Bernstein,
Associate Professor of Math, Statistics, and Computer Science; Mark
Mattaini,
Associate Professor of Social Work; and Bradford Schwartz, Regional Dean,
College of Medicine, Urbana.
This lecture series, named for Yuri Nakata, the University Library’s
first Government Publications
librarian, focuses on contemporary issues surrounding access to public
information in all its forms. This year’s event is co-sponsored the
by the University Library Faculty Lectures and Forums Committee
and
the UIC Faculty Senate
Library Sub-Committee.
