Military Medicine in World War II Showcased in 27th Evacuation Hospital Exhibit

Hand drawn map of the geographic history of the 27th Evacuation Hospital

Photographs and artifacts from the World War II 27th Evacuation Hospital that operated during World War II are on exhibit at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Richard J. Daley Library. In May 1942, as part of the war program of the University of Illinois, the Chicago Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy and Medicine, including Rush Medical College organized an Evacuation Hospital. It served as a mobile Field Hospital in the combat zone to provide emergency care for the wounded. The hospital functioned in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany following the 7th Army.

This exhibit highlights materials and documents from the 27th Evacuation Hospital Collection, part of the University Archives at the Library of Health Sciences. This collection is comprised of donations from those who served with the 27th Evacuation Hospital and includes official military records, correspondence, diaries, logs, photographs, films and assorted memorabilia documenting the experiences of soldiers and hospital personnel.

There is also an online exhibit which includes some of the photographs from the collection at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/specialcoll/exhibits/27evac/.

To learn more about this collection, or for permission to reproduce any of the images found in this exhibit, please contact the UIC University Archives at LIB-SPEC@uic.edu.
