Access to Government Information: Panel Examines Government Secrecy during Sunshine Week
The UIC Library is sponsoring a forum on the topic of open government and access to U.S. government information on Tuesday, March 14, at 2:00 pm in 613 SCE, during the national observance of Sunshine Week.
Three UIC faculty members will discuss government secrecy, the responsiveness of federal agencies to Freedom of Information Act requests, and the balance of national security and government transparency. The panelists are Doris Graber, professor of political science; Dick Simpson, professor of political science; and Jennie Brier, assistant professor of gender and women’s studies. The panel moderator is Aimee Quinn, assistant documents librarian.
Sunshine Week is a national initiative to focus attention on the importance of open government. This year, during March 12 –18, the media, open-government and First Amendment advocates, librarians, civic groups, and educators will engage in a variety of public programs to demonstrate the importance of access to public records for information on current events and in order to preserve the record for future generations of researchers.
