Issue no. 108, September 17, 2002

Welcome to the 2002/2003 Academic Year

The UIC Library welcomes all new and old faculty to the first issue of Library-News for 2002/2003. This will be a challenging year when we have a decreased budget to work with and increased demands on the Library. Because of the budget woes, the Library has had to give up positions in the Library, decrease hours for all libraries, and cancel some print resources. We will be buying fewer books that we have in the past and will not be adding new print journal subscriptions. In keeping with our goal to maintain an outstanding electronic resource collection, we will be adding new electronic resources, including new electronic journal collections. It is very important that we keep electronic resources as a priority when we have to cut library service hours. The electronic resources are available at all times, regardless whether or not the libraries are open.

Where possible, we are canceling the print counterparts of journals that we acquire electronically. Many publishers, however, will not permit us to do this so we will still have a large print collection that duplicates our electronic journal collection. Some collections, however, are not tied to the print, including Project Muse, IEEE journals, and BioOne. With these three collections we have canceled the print beginning with 2003.

Also, in order to gain much needed stack space for currently received materials, we continue to send materials to storage. Books that are 20 or more years old and have not circulated for 20 years are prime candidates for storage. Journals that are fully accessible electronically will have their print counterparts sent to storage. These materials are still available but it may take a few days for us to retrieve them from remote storage for your use.

BioOne

BioOne is an Internet-based collection of electronic journals in the biological, ecological and environmental sciences. Articles in BioOne are full text, and include all illustrations and links from the original printed articles. BiOne journals are published by scholarly societies, museums and other organizations, many of which are members of the American Institute for biological Sciences. You may access this collection at http://www.bioone.org/bioone/ where you will see a complete list of journals included in this collection, including years of coverage. The individual titles are included in our list of electronic journals at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/reference/resources/journals/. The following journals are included in this collection:
