Loeb Library of Classical Studies
The Library is pleased to announce that they have bought the complete, latest
printing of the Loeb Library of Classical Studies, published by Harvard University
Press, consisting of just under 500 volumes, and counting. These texts are
primary texts in Greek and Latin with English translations on facing pages.
The works covered are from the beginnings of Greek and Latin literature to
the end of Classical Antiquity. Along with the German Teubner and the French
Belles Lettres collected sets, it is the standard resource for these Greek
and Latin texts. The English translations are periodically revised or even
replaced to reflect contemporary ideals of translations. The original texts
are also subject to editorial attention from edition to edition. The main emphasis
is on the texts; there is relatively little secondary material included, and
that mainly of linguistic nature. The Library has many of these volume cataloged
separately and can be found throughout the Daley Library stacks. This new purchase,
however, is being classified as a set so that they will all be together and
will be in the Daley Library Reserve Reading Room for room use only. With such
a large number of volumes, it will take some time to finish processing all
volumes and make them available to the public, but the first few volumes are
now on the shelves in the Reserve Reading Room. The initial cost of this collection
was $8,000.
