Aerial Photo Maps
The Library's newest set of black and white aerial photomaps for the
six-county Chicago metropolitan area is now available for use by the UIC
community. These maps are mosaic enlargements made from vertical aerial
photography (images taken by a camera perpendicular to the surface of the
earth). Each sheet covers an area two miles by two miles square. This
set, along with the Library's earlier sets for 1980 and 1990, coincides
closely with Census data and continues to document the region's transition
from rural to exurban to urban. Aerial photography is highly valued
because it shows more detail than one finds on a topographic map. Careful
analysis of aerial photos can determine land use and identify past
environmental hazards and potential environmental threats. These aerial
photomaps are house in the Richard J. Daley Library's Map Section under
call number G4102N6A4s4.W3 and are organized by township, range and
section numbers. The Map Section is located on the 3rd floor of the Daley
Library. For assistance, please ring the bell at the desk on the 3rd
floor. This collection cost $17,164.00.
