Issue no. 130, April 5, 2004
The Library is pleased to announce renewals to the following databases.
ScienceDirect
This database is jointly subscribed to by the UIC, UIUC, and UIS. It
provides electronic access to all of the print journals published by
Elsevier Science that are held jointly by the 3 campuses. Last year
negotiations among the three campuses were made to decide on who would
keep the print copy of the journal. Although you may not find a print
title in the library that you previously were used to finding, that title
is available electronically through ScienceDirect. We will have to
renegotiate for 2005 and will then determine any changes in who is keeping
the print and whether there should be any new titles added that no one
currently has. Since Elsevier has purchased some other publishers, the
journals from those publishers will be considered in the next renewal if
they were not included in the 2004 negotiation. Academic Press titles are
part of the 2004 renewal. The total cost of this database for all 3
campuses is $473,778.50. UIC's cost was $200,882.08. The print
subscriptions cost four times what we are paying for the online or
$1,895,112.00. Individual titles may be found in the Library's list of
