ERIC is a national education database sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI). Presently the largest education database in the world, ERIC contains over 700,000 citations covering research and report documents and journal articles in education and related fields.
Now, many ERIC documents from 1996 to the present are available full-text online, through the EDRS service. Although you may search for and order ERIC documents (for which you pay), the library recommends, instead, that UIC students, faculty and staff use the following procedure to download selected documents at no cost.
*Search the ERIC database from IBIS. Your search will give you references to ERIC documents (identified as ED followed by a number) and to journal articles.
*To read ERIC documents from 1996 to the present, do an "express search" in the EDRS database by copying the complete ED number and clicking on "search." You may search for up to 30 ED numbers at a time. Follow the instructions to retrieve the documents.
*To read ERIC documents unavailable as full-text online in EDRS, visit the Microforms Room on the 3rd floor of the UIC Richard J. Daley Library (Main Library) where you will find ERIC documents in microfiche dating from 1970 to the present.
*For help in locating a journal article in print or online, ask at the Reference or Information Services desk at any one of the UIC Library locations.
If you have questions about using the EDRS database, telephone the Richard J. Daley Library Reference Department at 312-996-2726, ask in person at the Richard J. Daley Library Reference Desk, or send an e-mail to lib-ref@uic.edu .
Library-News is an electronic newsletter reporting on major acquisitions in the UIC Library, news of changes in the library that may impact on service, and news of newly acquired electronic resources.
