Times Literary Supplement Centenary Archive

The University of Illinois at Chicago Library announces the availability of the Times Literary Supplement (TLS) online as the Times Literary Supplement Centenary Archive. The current release of the archive covers the period from 1902-1939; subsequent releases will expand complete coverage to 1990 by the end of 2000. This database combines the complete facsimile edition of the TLS, the systematic and exhaustive TLS Index, and new information on hitherto anonymous contributors, providing an unparalleled opportunity to track the views of influential opinion makers, the response of their peers, the controversies of the day, and how they developed those controversies. Over 250,000 reviews, letters, poems, and articles in over 5,000 issues of the TLS will be available by the end of 2000.

This database provides comprehensive biographical information on all contributors. You can search by author, title, contributor, publisher, subject and date in any combination, as well as searching for names of translators and illustrators. A contributor search will permit you to call up information by contributor name, occupation, gender, publications, languages reviewed or any combination. You will be able to research specific contributions by leading literary figures such as Virginia Woolf; discover how major works were received upon publication; and research the number of reviews by individual contributors such as the more than 700 pieces now attributed to the best-selling novelist Marie Belloc Lowndes.

This database has been made available through a CIC consortial agreement with Primary Source Media/Gale Group. To access the database go to the URL: http://www.tls.psmedia.com/ . This database will soon appear on the Library's homepage under the alphabetical listing of databases.
