Early English Books Online (EEBO)

The UIC Library is pleased to announce the availability of Early English Books Online (EEBO). From the first book printed in English by William Caxton, through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare and the tumult of the English Civil War, Early English Books Online (EEBO) contains over 125,000 titles listed in Pollard and Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640), Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700), and the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661). The Early English Books Tract Supplements will be added to EEBO soon.

This database can be searched quickly and efficiently by author, title, printer, publication date, type of illustration, and Library of Congress subject headings, with the records linked to the corresponding page images, downloadable in Adobe Acrobat format. Among the thousands of titles featured in EEBO are works by Malory, Bacon, More, Erasmus, Boyle, Newton, Galileo; musical exercises by henry Purcell and novels by Aphra Behn; prayer books, pamphlets, and proclamations; almanacs, calendars, and many other primary sources. Although the Library owns the corresponding microform collection, EEBO makes the collection widely available.

The works in this collection are presented as images, which may be viewed online, or downloaded in PDF format for viewing off-line. To view the images online, you will need the DJVU plugin from AT&T and to view PDF documents, you will need the Acrobat Reader plugin from Adobe. Both can be downloaded from the website for EEBO. CAUTION: The DJVU plugin cannot be downloaded to the public workstations in the Library. This plugin will be loaded onto the public terminals later this year. To access EEBO from your personal workstation, go to the alphabetical list of databases on the Library's homepage at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib or go directly to the EEBO URL at http://wwwlib.umi.com/eebo .
