Electronic Journals

The UIC Library continues to add more electronic full-text journals to its collection. There are currently well over 2,000 titles available. The individual titles of all recent additions are being added to the list of electronic journals that appears on the Library's new homepage at http://www.uic.edu/depts/libnew/ . Until all titles are added to this list, access to the titles of some publishers is through the Collections list, a subset of the alphabetical list. The Collections list includes collections of journals from the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Physics, Annual Reviews, Institute of Physics, Karger, Project Muse, SIAM, and Springer-Verlag; as well as three aggregators--OCLC's Electronic Collections Online (ECO), Ovid, and EbscoHost.

The two most recent additions to the Collections are Blackwell Science/Munksgaard and ScienceDirect (Elsevier e-journals). The Blackwell Science/Munksgaard collection contains over 200 titles and includes all titles regardless of whether or not the Library has a print subscription. The individual titles have been entered into the alphabetical list of electronic journals. ScienceDirect is a collection of over 1,000 Elsevier titles with free access to all titles for which we have a paper subscription and free per article access to all the other Elsevier titles. The individual titles of this collection will be entered into the alphabetical list of electronic journals over the next few weeks. Watch for a more detailed description of ScienceDirect in a future issue of Library-News.

JSTOR and journals of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers will be available as soon as the licenses are agreed upon.

We are negotiating with Wiley Interscience to have access to those journals for which we have paper subscriptions. We hope to have an agreement by the middle of September. Although we very much would like to have access to the IEEE and ACM publications online, we are unable to accept their license agreement since it limits the definition of a site for UIC. Highwire Press has a collection of high profile science journals which we, also, would like to add, but the license agreement is unacceptable.

As electronic journals are added to the UIC collection, they are systematically being fully cataloged into the Web version of UICCAT where you will find hot-links of URLs that will take you directly to the online journal. We are investigating the linking of journal titles in our online databases so that when one searches a database and UIC has the journal online, you will be able to click on the citation and go directly to the online journal for the article.
