HarpWeek and Directory of UK Map Collections

The UIC Library is pleased to announce the addition of the following two electronic resources:

HarpWeek-this resource provides electronic access to Harper's Weekly, the 19th century "Journal of Civilization." This is perhaps the most important primary resource for examining nineteenth century America on a cumulative week-to-week basis. This electronic resource makes it possible for the user to discover the lively editorials, news stories, illustrations, cartoons, and even advertisements that shaped and reflected public opinion in this era.

Through IDAL (Illinois Digital Academic Library) we now have access to the HarpWeek database covering the period from 1857-1877. It provides a thesaurus-based index, searchable full-text and complete page images.

HarpWeek can be found in the Library's alphabetical list of electronic resources under Resources on the Library's homepage at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/ or you can go directly to the database at http://app.harpweek.com .

Directory of UK Map Collections-this directory will no longer be published in paper and is now available as an electronic resource. This is a comprehensive directory of map collections in the United Kingdom found in national libraries, mapping agencies, corporations in London, government libraries, and London museums, societies, institutions, and businesses. It may be found in the Library's alphabetical list of electronic resources under Resources on the Library's homepage at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/ or you can go directly to the database at http://www.cartography.org.uk/Pages/Publicat/Ukdir/UKDir.html .
