What's New in the University Library
The University Library is pleased to announce several changes in services that the library offers to faculty, students, and staff. These include longer hours in the Richard J. Daley Library, new photocopying/printing vendor, redesigned Library homepage, laptop computers available for check out, and cell phone policy. Also, in order to be able to shelve newly purchased materials, the Library has begun a systematic check of the monographs in the Richard J. Daley Library to identify titles for storage.Longer Hours in the Richard J. Daley Library
As a pilot project, the Richard J. Daley Library has increased the number of hours that it is open during the Fall and Spring semesters. The new, longer hours are 1pm to 12midnight on Sunday and 7:30am to 12midnight on Monday through Thursday. The entire Library is open until 10pm. After 10pm, only the first floor is open, including Reserve and Circulation. For a full schedule of Library hours for the fall semester go to http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/admin/services/schedules/ .Quiet Study Areas
We are very pleased with the increased use of the Richard J. Daley Library for study and research. This increased use has brought about more group studying which interferes with individual studying. As a result, the Richard J. Daley Library has designated the first floor south and third floor north as Quiet Study Areas.Photocopying/Printing Vendor
The Library has contracted with Gordon Flesch Company, Inc. (GFC) to provide photocopying/printing in all of the Chicago campus libraries. If you have a copy card from the previous vendor, you have until September 9, 2000 to exchange it for one from GFC at copy centers in the Richard J. Daley Library and the Library of the Health Sciences. All new photocopiers and microform reader/printers have been installed. Printing is now available from any computer workstation for the same fee as photocopying. GFC Copy Centers are in the Daley Library, Room 1-448 LIB on the first floor (312-996-6369; uicdaley@gflesch.com ) and Library of the Health Sciences, Room 203LHS (312-355-4379, uiclhs@gflesch.com ). The Copy Centers will offer color copying and will sell basic supplies such as pens, paper, computer diskettes, and highlighters. GFC had one promotional day on August 23, 2000 and will have another on August 29, 2000.Laptop Computers
You may use your University ID (I-card) to check out a laptop computer from the Reserve Desk of the Richard J. Daley Library. The wireless network permits you to use the Laptops on the first and second floors of the Library with the third and fourth floors being available later in the year.Redesigned Library Homepage
A newly designed homepage for the Library can be found at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/ . The new look offers quick access to UICCAT, services, hours/locations, resources, web site search, and news. Check out qUICsearch for one stop searching and a new web access to UICCAT. UICCAT will soon be available until 2am.Cell Phone Policy
The University has a new cell phone policy. For the Richard J. Daley Library, cell phones or other audible electronic devices may not ring or be used in the designated Quiet Study Areas of one south and three north, anywhere in the Science Library and anywhere in the Architecture and Art Library. Cell phone users must leave other study areas in the Richard J. Daley Library and any areas of the Math reading room ( 430 SEO) or the Library of the Health Sciences in order to talk on a cell phone.Storage
The Science Library and the Richard J. Daley Library have been sending science monographs and little used, older titles, or earlier issues of journals to off campus Warehouse storage. Monographs from the Richard J. Daley Library stacks are now being identified by the Bibliographers for storage on compact shelving in the basement of the Richard J. Daley Library. Items in the Warehouse or in the basement storage may be requested at the Circulation desk. Faculty may contact H. Robert Malinowsky, Principal Bibliographer ( hrm@uic.edu ) in the Collections Development Office for detailed information about how materials are selected for storage.
