Issue no. 82, November 15, 2000

Nature

Effective December 1, 2000, the Library will lose its complimentary subscription to the electronic edition of the journal, Nature, and users will no longer have online access to the journal. Although the Library Board of Nature worked hard to educate the publisher about the importance of full text access for users, new management of the journal chose not to heed their concern and proposed a licensing agreement with terms that are unacceptable at UIC.

The license provides for "immediate access to the peer-reviewed material on the date of publication as well as full functionality including searchability, the ability to view and download articles from the archives." However, there are two terms that are unacceptable to UIC:

  1. A 12-issue embargo on electronic access to the non-article content of the journal, including Opinion, News, Correspondence, Commentary, Book Reviews, Features, Special Essays (e.g. Millennium Essay), News & Views, News in Brief, Reviews, Daedelus, 50 Years Ago, 100 Years Ago, Obituary, Art & Science, Autumn Books, Briefing, Careers and Recruitment, Film Review, News Analysis, New Journals, New on the Market, News Profile, News & Views Feature, Progress, Review Articles, Spring Books, Technology, and Techniques & Technology.
  2. A 3-month delay to having electronic access to the monthlies of Nature.
The UIC Library believes that any subscription to a journal should provide full electronic access to all parts of the journal at the same time as the print is available. Thus the Library cannot agree to these terms.

Experience has shown that a decision to not purchase by libraries often leads in time to a revised license that is acceptable. If you, as a reader of the electronic edition of Nature, would like to voice your concern to the publisher you may contact the following individuals in New York:
