EZProxy

The University Library and the Computer Center have installed a new netid-protected proxy server. As with the former proxy server, sometimes referred to as Bluestem, the new proxy server, EZProxy, allows UIC students, faculty, and staff to use electronic resources licensed by the Library when off-campus.

WHY A NEW PROXY?

It can be used anywhere using any web browser -- even behind firewalls or with ISDN/DSL/Cable Modem systems using their own proxy server.

It generally requires no special configuration.

HOW DOES THE NEW PROXY WORK?

Simply click on the link on the University Library's Web page for a desired electronic resource restricted to UIC students, faculty, and staff. If you are not located on-campus, you will be asked for your netid and password. If successfully entered, you will be passed through to the resource. Once validated, you will stay authorized for about an hour. If you change databases your validation will continue. After your validation has expired, you will be prompted to revalidate.

WHAT IF I WAS SUCCESSFULLY USING ELECTRONIC RESOURCES WHEN OFF-CAMPUS WITH THE FORMER PROXY?

Although the former proxy server will remain available until May 2001, you are encouraged to switch to the new proxy now. The major advantage to making the switch immediately is that resources licensed from now on will only be available through the new proxy.

All that is necessary to make the switch is to remove the following text from your Web browser proxy configuration - www.uic.edu/proxy.pac. For simple instructions on how to check for this text in your browser configuration, please consult:
