Issue no. 87, January 29, 2001
Extension of Circulation Privileges
Effective January, 2001, libraries at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, and Cook County Hospital have agreed to extend borrowing privileges to faculty members at all three institutions. As a result of this agreement, any University of Illinois at Chicago faculty member will be able to borrow books from the libraries of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center or Cook County Hospital for 2 weeks. Other materials will be restricted to in-house only.
This program was initiated as part of an effort to enhance collaboration among the University of Illinois at Chicago, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, and Cook County Hospital and follows from discussions held among the three institutions during this last summer.
We urge faculty to adhere to the circulation policies of the lending library, including returning or renewing material by the date due, and responding to recall requests in a timely fashion. Failure to do so may jeopardize the continuation of this agreement. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Jacobson, Assistant University Librarian for the Health Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago: 312-996-8974 or sjake@uic.edu.
Center for Research Libraries (CRL)
UIC is a longtime member of CRL, a major research library here in Chicago. It provides unique and hard to find materials in all languages for member libraries to borrow and use. CRL has just introduced a consolidated web-based guide to the CRL collections called CRL Quick Search. The purpose of this webpage is to provide one click access to all the major tools used to gather information about CRL's holdings, including the CRL online catalog, its Handbook of collection information, the searchable databases dealing with specific collections, digital collections at CRL, and descriptions of highlighted collection holdings. The CRL Quick Search webpage can be viewed at http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/info/quicksearch.htm .
Two new collections have been added to the searchable databases at CRL. The first is a database that is in the process of being developed. Some 11,000 of the 750,000 doctoral dissertations from outside the United States and Canada have been input. Using this database, one can search these titles by author, title, institution name, the year the dissertation was defended, language, subject/keywords, and/or translated title. This database can be found at: http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/dbdissertations/search.asp .
A second database provides a searchable listing of 3,200 science-related journal titles using criteria such as title, subject, language, and country. These journals are hard to locate titles that are not owned by universities throughout the United States and Canada. This database can be found at http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/info/srmp/index.html .
We encourage researchers at UIC to browse the CRL Quick Search webpage and see what might be available for your research needs. UIC considers CRL as a research arm of our own Library.
