New Exhibit
Peter Hepburn of the Reference Department in Daley Library has put together a book exhibit relating to Black History Month. The theme, this year, as announced by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), is The Color Line Revisited: Is Racism Dead? The book display includes a selection of recent titles on issues of racism in the United States as well as some older books providing a bit of historical context. A bibliography is available on request. For more information on the exhibit, contact Peter Hepburn at phepburn@uic.edu.
Sanborn Maps
(Digital Illinois)Thanks to the State Library IDAL, UIC now has access to the Sanborn maps of the State of Illinois in black and white. More than 660,000 Sanborn maps have been produced from 1867 to 1970, charting the growth and development of more than 12,000 American towns and cities. Sanborn maps are large-scale maps, drawn at a scale of 50 feet to an inch. They were created to assist fire insurance companies as they assessed the risk associated with insuring a particular property.
The maps serve as historical tools for urban specialists, social historians, architects, geographers, genealogists, local historians, planners, and environmentalists. They show outlines of each building; the size, shape, and construction materials; height and function of structures; and location of windows and doors. They, also, provide street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Extensive information on building use is also given.
This very important electronic resource can be found at http://sanborn.umi.com/.
