Biographical Sketch - Sally C. Tseng 2004  SALLY C. TSENG is currently the Executive Director of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA). She was formerly Head, Serials Cataloging at the University of California , Irvine (UCI) Libraries and held the highest distinguished rank at the University of California librarians’ series. Sally was elected Councilor of the American Library Association (ALA) and of the California Library Association (CLA). She was appointed to serve as Chair on major committees of ALA , CALA, CLA, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), and the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS). She was the Chair of the ALCTS 2001-2003 Institutes on AACR2 and Metadata, Chair of the ALCTS, Committee to Study Serials Cataloging, 1998-2001; and Chair of several ALCTS international conferences, institutes and pre-conferences. Sally was appointed by the California State Librarian, from the late 1980 to 1990s, to chair the California Network Steering Committee and the California Network Serials Task Force. As a result of her visionary leadership, California statewide online serials bibliographic records have been included in MELVYL, a University of California online database system that includes collections from all types of libraries in California . Beginning in the mid-1990s, these records became the foundation of the California Digital Library that provides links to full text journals, databases and Web resources via the World Wide Web.

Sally has received numerous awards and recognitions for her achievements and contributions to the library and information profession , including the Distinguished Service Award from the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), ALCTS President’s Award in 2002 and numerous professional development awards. Sally has served as a Consultant for the International Advisory Panel, the Chinese University Development Project, the National Academy of Sciences in Washington , D.C. , the World Bank, the Chinese Ministry of Education, Peking University and several key libraries in China . She has received University of California (UC) and UCI Research Grants Awards, UCI Friends of the Library Authors' Awards, Orange County Authors' Awards, University of Oregon , Scholarships and her biographies and featured articles cited in numerous Who's Who and professional publications. Sally was President of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and President of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), and is currently the CALA Executive Director.

Sally has published several major reference tools for the profession that are used worldwide. Selected titles are:Electronic Cataloging : AACR2 and Metadata for Serials and Monographs; LC Rule Interpretations of the Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR) 1 st –2 nd editions;LC Romanization Tables and Cataloging Policies;Areas of Cooperation in Library Development in Asian and Pacific Regions; Getting Ready for AACR2 : The Cataloger's Guide, etc. In addition, Sally has published more than 50 articles and papers with emphases on library automation, cataloging and bibliographic organization, compact disc, digital, electronic and Internet resources, FRBR, knowledge management, metadata, serials, etc. Sally is a much sought after speaker and trainer. She has been invited frequently to speak at international and national conferences and to conduct workshops in the United States and major cities in China , Korea , Taiwan , Thailand and other countries. She was editor of the Journal of Educational Media & Library Sciences , 1982‑1997 and ACRL Publications in Librarianship, 1997-1999.

Sally holds an MLS degree from the University of Oregon and a BA degree from Soochow University .

Dr. Marcia Lei Zeng is Professor of Library and Information Science at Kent State University . She holds a Ph.D. from the School of Information Sciences at University of Pittsburgh and M.A. from Wuhan University in China . Her major research interests include knowledge organization and representation, digital libraries, indexing and abstracting, and database quality control. Her scholarly publications include over 60 papers and two books, as well as many national and international conference presentations. She was invited to speak on the topics of knowledge organization systems, metadata, and digital libraries at various countries. She is the P.I. and Co-P.I. of two National Science Foundation's (NSF) National Science Digital Library (NSDL) projects. She was also the recipients of a number of awards and grants from other associations and institutions such as the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST), OCLC, and OhioLINK. Since 1994, she has been invited to organize seminars, conferences, workshops, and lectures for Chinese libraries and information institutions. She has been involved in the establishment of the guidelines for open description and standards application in Chinese Science Digital Library (CSDL) Project. She is on the advisory board for Peking University Library , Yunnan Province Library , and the China Society of Indexers . She is also awarded as a Guest Research Fellow of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Internationally, Dr. Zeng serves on a number of thesaurus-related standards committees for the organizations such as the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), The Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). She served as the Chair of the SLA Cataloguing Committee and Chair of Technical Standards Committee for several years. She is currently the Chair of the IFLA Section on Classification and Indexing.

武 汉大学图书情报学院学士( 1982 )、 硕士( 1984 ),美国匹 兹堡大学信息
科学学院博士( 1992 )。 1985 年至 1988 年在武 汉大学图书情报学院任教,现
为美国肯特州立大学( Kent State University ) 图书情报学院教授。研究与教学
领域包括数字图书馆、知识组织系统(含分类法、叙词表、语义网络、使用分类系
统等语义工具),文献标引与检索,元数据与置标语言,多语种信息处理、数据库
质量分析与控制、数字图像处理、电子出版等。 1982 年以来在国内及国 际刊物、
百科全书、各种国际学术会议上发表研究文章 60 余篇, 编写专著三本,应邀在北
美、南美、亚洲、欧洲各国讲学,主持若干由美国国家自然科学基金会、 OCLC 联
机图书馆计算机中心、俄亥俄联机网络( OhioLINK) 等 资助的研究项目。曾获美
国情报学会最佳博士论文奖和其它奖励。 曾任 专业图书馆协会( Special Libraries
Association, SLA) 编目委员会主席和 技 术标准委员会主席,美国国家信息标准
组织( National Information Standards Organization, NISO) 委 员 , 现任 国
际图联( IFLA) 标引与分类法委员会主席, 若干国 际会议组织委员会成员等。
1994 年以来多次 应国内大学和科研单位邀请回国参加学术会议、组织讲习班、举
办不同形式的讲座,并参加了国内数字图书馆项目有关标准规范的制定。现受 聘
为上海交通大学客座研究教授、 北京大学数字化 图书馆研究所顾问、《现代图书
情报技术》编委、中国索引学会顾问等。
