Ohio University Honoring Dr. Hwa-wei Lee

Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee retires on August 31, 1999. after twenty one years as Dean of Libraries at Ohio University. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, Ohio University has named a new library Annex as the Hwa-Wei Lee Library Annex on May 22, 1999. (Picture 1)

Lee's retirement marked the culmination of a distinguished 40-year career in academic libraries, beginning at the University of Pittsburgh, then Duquene University, Edinborg University of Pennsylvania, Asian Institute of Technology at Bangkok, Thailand, Colorado State University and Ohio University.

He has served the American Library Association (ALA) in a variety of capacities, including as a Councilor at Large 1988-91 and 1992-97, the Chair of the Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific International Relations Committee. For his significant contributions to international librarianship, he was the recipient of the John Ames Humphry Award in 1991 presented by ALA International Relations Committee and the Forest Press OCLC.

Lee also served actively at the Ohio Library Association, being recognized as Ohio Librarian of the Year in 1987, elected as a board director 1990-93, and was appointed as a delegate to the White House Conference on Library and Information Services, July 9-13, 1991.

Dr. Lee was a past president of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), 1978-79, and was the recipient of the CALA Distinguished Services Award in 1984. For his contribution to the Asian pacific Librarian Association (APALA), he was presented the APALA Distinguished Services Award in 1983.

Lee was also very active in IFLA, and has been a much sought after lecturer and consultant in many Asian countries. He has published three books and more than sixty papers, and was the organizer of five international library conferences.

CALA Midwest Chapter sends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Lee on this occasion for his remarkable accomplishments. We sincerely wish Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee for a very enjoyable and active retirement.
