On April 27th, 2002, 17 Chinese American librarians in the state of Ohio, most of whom are members of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), gathered for a meeting at the Asian Garden Restaurant in Columbus to discuss ways to promote Chinese American librarianship and ways in which Chinese American librarians can contribute to the development of libraries in China. Participants were from Oberlin College, OCLC, Ohio University, Ohio Wesleyan University and invited guest librarians from China. The lunch meeting started at 11:00 am and ended at 2:30 pm. Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee, Dean Emeritus of Ohio University Libraries, gave a presentation entitled "How Can CALA Members Participate in Library Developments in China?" Dr. Lee outlined past and current collaborative projects between librarians in China and Chinese American librarians in the U.S. and explored possible and potential areas for future developments. Dr. Lee's fascinating talk generated much excitement among participants. Everyone left the meeting, feeling excited and rejuvenated. Participants all agreed that meetings as such would be much needed in the future.
