Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China A Brief Introduction
Located on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, on the banks of Tai Hu Lake, Suzhou is an historic city of world reknown with a history of more than 2,500 years. Here one sees remnants of the old grandeur that once blossomed in the gardens of rich officials and merchants. Deeply immersed in the Wu Culture, its people are gentle and cultivated. Their hospitality is expressed in their soft southern accents.
This is a region where water seems as prevalent as land. The city itself is encircled by canals and threaded through with interlocking waterways that give it the look of Venice. Like Venice, Suzhou is a city of waterfront houses and flying bridges. These delicate bridges, flowing man-made rivers, white walls and black tiles give the city an elegant temperament, simple yet tasteful. The gardens of Suzhou are exquisite, poetic and picture-like in conception, and lend themselves to contemplation. They are a precious cultural heritage. Suzhou is a ! place of graceful living and natural beauty. "Above is Paradise", goes an old Chinese saying, "below is Suzhou".
Let's go to Suzhou -- a city in water, yet a city above water. A beautiful scenic sight of southern China, and of the Orient.
