In October, 1998, the National Library of Medicine awarded a contract to the Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Illinois - Chicago, to fund the Chicago Environmental and Public Health Outreach Project (CEPHOP). The overall purpose of the project is to train community representatives at eight Chicago area sites to access public health, environmental health, and related information, both via the World Wide Web and online literature databases (specifically MEDLINE). In turn, these representatives will be able to act as information resources to their constituents and neighborhoods. The grant covers development of the project from January 1, 1999 through June 30, 2000. Each site will be provided with a computer, internet access (during the 18-month period), and necessary software and supplies. Four training sessions will be conducted at each site - beginning and advanced MEDLINE searching, and beginning and advanced WWW searching. In addition, a fifth class will be offered to give basic instruction on the development of a site homepage on the Web. Principal developers of the project include:
