History in brief:

The county's history includes many periods of hardship as well as glory that are depicted in the region's many monuments. Iasi -- "the town of the seven hills" - is mentioned in the 15th century act issued by Prince Alexandru cel Bun (1400-1432) granting its commercial privileges, but the history of the Iasi area goes back to the beginnings of this millenium. Archeological excavations in Cucuteni village have revealed a brilliant Neolithic European culture in the famous Cucuteni Culture (millenium 3-2BC).

Having a leading position in Romania's economy, the development of Iasi town is connected to its very good geographical location at the crossing of old commercial ways. Iasi region is one of the major nodes of the eastern part of Romania and its network of roads and railways is easily accessible from any part of Romania, including the Black Sea and the Danube River, and also from Europe and the countries of the former Soviet Union. Because of these advantages, Iasi is an open window to good business.

Iasi's agriculture provides about 3% of Romania's total production. Among the notable agricultural products are wheat, corn, sunflowers, sugar beet, potatoes, and fruits. Vineyards and animal breeding complete this list.
