STARTING YOUR RESEARCH IN EDUCATION

ARTICLES, REFERENCE SOURCES, WEB SITES AND MORE AT THE UIC LIBRARY

For use by educators and those conducting research on K-12 education



ONLINE RESOURCES are best accessed from the Library's home page by choosing the Electronic Resources quick link in the drop down menu.  Resources are listed in alphabetical order.  Use the following databases to locate journal articles on education:

Academic Search Premier -- Selected full text for nearly 1,560 academic, social sciences, humanities, general science, education, and multi-cultural journals.

Education Abstracts -- Leading publications in the field of education.

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) -- Articles and ERIC documents in the field of education.

FirstSearch -- Indexes and articles from multiple databases.

Expanded Academic ASAP -- A broad multidisciplinary database that offers many articles in full text. A great place to start your research.

Ingenta -- A comprehensive database of scholarly materials across a variety of disciplines. 

Kraus Curriculum Development Library -- A searchable database of curricula, frameworks, and standards brings together educational objectives, content, instructional strategies, and evaluative techniques for all subjects covered in PreK-12 and Adult Basic Education.

Physical Education Index -- Articles in physical education curricula, sports medicine, dance, sports law, kinesiology, motor learning, recreation, and more.

Professional Development Collection -- Designed for professional educators; contains nearly 600 full text journals.

qUICsearch -- Cross search multiple databases simultaneously!

Wilson Select Plus -- Full text articles in science, humanities, education, and business from U.S. and international professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines.

Note – If you find an article that is not available through the database, check UICCAT for holdings. Just enter the name of the journal in the search box and search by “Journal/Magazine Title”.


REFERENCE RESOURCES are available to the east of the reference desk on the second floor of the Library. Print resources often offer broad overviews of topics and are excellent choices for those just beginning their research. Additional books on more specific topics may be found in the "L" call number section on the south end of the fourth floor of the Daley Library.

THE CURRICULUM COLLECTION is on the north side of the second floor. It contains reading materials, reference materials, test guides and text books for educators.


SELECTED WEB SITES

FREE (Federal Resources for Educational Excellence) -- Provides easy, one-stop access to learning resources from more than 35 federal agencies. Includes, maps, video and sound recordings, photos, maps, activities, primary documents, and more.

GEM (The Gateway to Educational Materials) -- U.S. Department of Education sponsored consortium that locates, evaluates, and indexes thousands of education resources available through government, organizational, and commercial Web sites.

Learning Page -- A Library of Congress sponsored Web site. A teacher-focused resource that provides access, lesson plans, and activities based upon the American Memories Collection.

National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) -- Collects and analyzes data regarding education in the United States and various other countries.

National Library of Education -- An umbrella site that provides access to various U.S. government education Web sites.

U.S. Department of Education -- The federal agency that is responsible for overseeing matters of education (Pre-K through higher education). Provides links and resources for students, teachers, and parents.

U.S. Department of Education Cross-Site Index -- Education-related links compiled by the U.S. Department of Education. Search individual sites or multiple sites simultaneously.

World Data on Education -- Provides access to profiles and reports related to the organization and function of national education systems.
