Reference Resources

Reference sources are a good way to start your research, especially if you don't know very much about your topic. You can familiarize yourself with the history, key concepts, people, and jargon related to your topic using the following resources. Many of them include further readings or a bibliography after each entry that will lead you to other sources of information. These sources and more can be found in the Reference section, located on the 2nd floor of the Daley Library.

  • American Immigrant Cultures: Builders of a Nation E184.A1 A63448 1997

Finding Books

Use UICCAT, the UIC Library's online catalog, to find books in the field of ethnic studies. Some effective search strategies include:

  • Any word Anywhere. Web search engines such as Google work in much the same way. Use quotation marks if you are searching for an exact phrase.
      • "ethnic identity"
      • multiculturalism

  • Boolean Search. Use AND, OR, or NOT to refine your search.
      • Japan AND indigenous
      • Arapaho NOT history
      • Basque OR Catalan OR Andalusian

  • Subject Search. This kind of search looks for subject keywords and phrases used by the Library of Congress. You must know the exact subject terms. A brief listing of subject headings is published in the LC Classification Outline. These blue books can be found posted at the ends of most bookshelves in the Daley Library. For a complete list of subject headings, please consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings, located at the Reference Desk.
      • Islam-customs and practices
      • Ethnic conflict-Prevention
      • Navajo Indians-Statistics, Vital
