FINDING BOOKS

If you need more detailed information, find out if there is a book on your topic. Use the library's online catalog UICCAT to search for your subject.

Use the Library's online catalog UICCAT to find items we own.

Perform a Boolean Search (use "and" to combine terms) to find books about history topics. For instance:

  • italian and history

Do a Subject search using the name of a historical figure to find biographical information on that person. For instance:

  • Lincoln, A

Use an Author search to find books written by a specific historian. For example:

  • Herodotus
If you're having trouble finding books on your topic, Ask a Librarian for further assistance.

FINDING ARTICLES

Articles are a good way to find more recent information on your subject. Search online and/or paper indexes on your subject to find articles in popular magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals.

The following databases are a good place to start looking for articles on your topic.  For a complete list of online databases and indexes at UIC, go to the  alphabetical list of electronic resources page.  If you need assistance using these online tools, ask a librarian to help you.

  • Historical Abstracts

  • America: History and Life

  • Humanities Abstracts

  • Social Sciences Abstracts
  • Early American Newspapers (1690-1876)
  • Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index
NOTE: UIC does not own all of the journals and magazines listed in the above indexes. Enter the name of the magazine or journal in UICCAT and search by "Journal/Magazine Title" to see if the UIC Library owns the title you need.
