Reference Sources

A good place to start if you are unfamiliar with a topic.

Resources noted here are multisport in nature. Other reference resources exist that focus on individual sports. Additionally, the reference collection has other items such as directories of college athletic programs, scholarship guides, and guides to the rules of sports. The librarians at the reference desk can direct you to a suitable resource.

The Reference Collection is located on the second floor of the Richard J. Daley (Main) Library. Reference resources may not be removed from the library.

Finding Books

UICCAT is the online catalog that tells you what books are in the Library.

Perform a Subject search for the word sports to find general works on the topic. More specific items can be found by searching terms such as

Aquatic sports
School sports
Olympics

the names of individual sports, such as

Gymnastics
Swimming

or the names of athletes or teams, such as

Owens, Jesse
New York Yankees

Try related terms like Athletes or Games as well.

Perform a Boolean search using and, or, or not when you want to search two or more words or phrases.  In this way sports or athletics may be combined with other words that describe your topic to narrow down your results.  For example:

sports and "mass media"
badminton or racquetball
gymnastics not dance

Check the call number and location in UICCAT to find out where each item is located.

Many physical education and sports resources have call numbers that start with GV.  They are located on the 3rd floor north of the Daley Library.

Finding Articles

To find articles, you will need to use an index or database.  Online indexes can be accessed from the pull-down menu on the Library's home page.  Select Electronic Resources-Alphabetical List, then click Go!

Listed below are a selection of useful databases (with links) for sports and athletics. Other databases are available that include a smaller number of relevant citations. Consult with a librarian at the 2nd floor reference desk for more advice.

Reader's Guide Abstracts online. It contains citations of articles from popular magazines and covers a broad range of subjects, including sports.

Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature in print. Coverage is from 1900 to the present.
Index tables, 2nd floor west
AI3 .R48

Sociological Abstracts online.  Documents all areas of sociology, including sports and their role in society.

ERIC is a comprehensive database of resources in education, including numerous items in physical education.

Physical Education Index online.  This database contains citations and abstracts of scholarly and popular articles, covering such aspects of physical education as coaching, sport psychology, biomechanics, and more.

Once you have the citations, journal articles can be located by searching UICCAT by the journal title to see if UIC subscribes to it. (We do not subscribe to every journal you may locate in an index)
