Finding
Books
To find books about women's studies, you must
use UICCAT,
the UIC libraries' online catalog.
Boolean (Keyword) Searching
A Boolean search is a great way to begin finding
books on a broad topic area. Simply typing in women as a Boolean search
in UICCAT,
however, will retrieve thousands of records. To focus your results, try doing
a search that combines several keywords of your topic. For example, if your
topic is "the representation of women in film" you might try different combinations
of the following keyword searches:
By using the exact subject heading, you can
focus your search so that you retrieve only books that fall within a particular
subject category. A good way to do this is by looking at the "LC Subjects"
area in the "Detailed Record" of some relevant books in UICCAT (once you've
done a preliminary keyword search). Alternately, you can consult the Library
of Conress Subject Headings (a red multi-volume set located at the Reference
Desk, 2nd floor of the Richard J. Daley Library), or ask a librarian.

Online Indexes
These online indexes are accessible from the
Library's homepage.
a) Select "Electronic Resources--Alphabetical List" from the "QUICKLINKS/ShortCuts"
menu.
b) Click on "Go!"
c) Choose the database you wish to search from the "Alphabetical List of Electronic
Resources."
Contemporary Women's Issues
Feminae:
Medieval Women and Gender Index
Gender Watch
Because Women's Studies is an inter-disciplinary
subject area, there may be additional article databases that would be worth
searching. See the UIC Library's Subject
Guide to Selected Article Databases for a full listing of article databases within particular subject
areas. "Gender Studies" is included under the broader subject heading "Social
and Behavioral Sciences."
UIC does not own all of the periodicals listed
in the above indexes, so you must do a Start of Magazine/Journal Title search in UICCAT
for the title of the periodical.
