Science and Engineering Resources on the Internet
The print collections in the Science Library are complemented by Internet resources that include electronic journals,
reference tools, and Web sites created for scientists and engineers. Many of these resources, particularly the electronic
journals and the databases that index journals, are licensed by the library. Use of these materials is restricted to those
affiliated with UIC. Other resources are freely available to all, and these include many materials produced by government
agencies and professional societies in science and engineering. Questions about using Internet resources may be directed to
LIB-SCI@uic.edu.
Journal publishers in science, technology, and medicine have played a leading role in electronic publishing. Recent issues
of many science journals are available on the Internet. These "electronic journals" may offer features such as interactive
graphics or data, images or sound, and full-text searching capability. The UIC Library is committed to building a strong collection
of electronic journals. For more information see:

Databases on the Internet provide references to the contents of science journals and are similar to print indexes and abstracts
that have long been part of the Science Library's reference collection. Many of the databases are electronic equivalents of familiar
print indexes while others exist only in electronic format. Some of these covering science and engineering subjects include:
- Access Science- all the articles, fully illustrated, from
the latest edition of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, and some extras, such as Science News headlines.
- Beilstein/Gmelin
- organic/inorganic chemistry
- Current Contents - recent articles
in science and engineering journals
- Gmelin/Beilstein
- inorganic/organic chemistry
- Journal
Citation Reports
- MathSciNet - mathematics, statistics,
and computer science
- SciFinder
Scholar - Client-Server application for searching Chemical Abstracts
- Web of Science Full text from 1975 to present when available and citation indexes produced by Thomson Scientific - ISI
Institute for Scientific Information
