Administrative History

The Office of Community Relations is an office within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs works to build and maintain relationships between UIC and its neighboring communities. The office works with local civic, corporate, and community organizations, and with alumni and internal constituents. The Office of Community Relations works to actively engage all of its units in helping UIC attain recognition as a leading urban based research institution. The Office of Community Relations is involved in many external organizations, projects, awards, and foundations.

Ann E. Smith was the Associate Chancellor For Community Affairs at UIC starting in 1988. Prior to becoming the Associate Chancellor For Community Affairs, she was a member of the Board Of Trustees. She was the first African American women to be elected to the board of trustees, where she served for four years. Prior to her connections with UIC, Ann E. Smith worked at Northeastern Illinois University first as Assistant to the President, and then as Vice President for academic affairs. This collection contains photographs of her and some of her correspondence.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of records from the Office of Community Relations. The collection is organized into fifteen series. The collection includes records from many organizations and foundations, as well as records from special projects and events.

Some of the special projects with information found in this collection include the UIC Center for Literacy, the Great Cities Program, The African American Cultural Center, the UIC Children Center, the Chicago Technology Park, the UIC Cooperative Education Program, and Native American Support Services.

External organizations found in this collection include Chicago Board of Education, Chicago Minority Business Development Council, Center for Inner City Studies, Chicago Access Corporation, and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

The collection also includes information on internal organization of UIC such as the Office of University Council, Campus Facilities, the Personnel Services Office, The Chancellor's Advisory Council on Minority Education, Unity Month, Chicago Millennium Celebration, South Campus Development, and A.B.L.A.

Series IV includes information and documents concerning many awards and foundations. Some of the foundations contained in this series are the Gamaliel Foundation, The Association of Mannequins, the National Science Foundation, the Kellogg Foundation, UIC President's Award, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award.

Committees found in this collection include the Committee of Institutional Cooperation, The National Science Foundation Committee, The American Association for Affirmative Action, The American Association for Higher Education, The American College, The American Heart Association, and the Anti-Defamation League.

Series VI is related to special events, some of which include Construction Management Training Programs, Chicago Public Housing Forum, Jane Addams Conference, Public Policy and African Americans, Parents Against Gangs, Minorities in Higher Education Forum, Priority One Campaign, Presidential lecture series, Jazz Festival, African American Leadership Dinner, West Side Consortium, and YMCA Children's Art and Education Center Events. There are three special events within the collection that have their own series, these are Unity Month, The NAACP Act-So Competition, and the Chicago Public Schools Read-In Events.

Series XIII information on polls and reports by the Office of Community Relations, a series strictly containing information about Hull House, and a series that consists of two boxes of videocassettes.
