Historical
Note
In 1957, the
University Statues were revised to include a Senate at Urbana-Champaign, the
Chicago Professional Colleges, and the Chicago Undergraduate Division. Prior to
1957, there was one Senate for the entire University of Illinois System.
According to
the 1957 Statutes, the Senate at each campus:
". . .
shall consist of full professors, the deans of colleges, the directors or deans
of schools and institutes, and heads and chairs of departments (or persons
acting in foregoing positions) at the campus represented by that campus; and on
the recommendation of the Committee on Educational Policy of that Senate, of
persons of other academic rank or administrative state, as each Senate may determine
by resolution."
The Senate
at each campus exercises legislative functions in matters of educational policy
affecting the University as a whole or its own campus. The Senate Coordinating
Council, (later renamed the University Senates Conference) considers matters
that concern more than one campus.
The Senate
of the Chicago Professional Colleges changed its name in 1960 to the Senate of
the Medical Center (or the University of Illinois at the Medical Center) to
reflect the reorganization of the University of Illinois into three campuses.
The name was changed again in 1980[?] to the Senate of the Health Sciences
Center following the merger of the two Chicago campuses to the University of
Illinois at Chicago. The Senate of the Health Sciences was consolidated with
the University of Illinois Chicago Circle (also known as University Center
after the creation of the University of Illinois at Chicago) Senate in the fall
of 1984 to form the University of Illinois at Chicago Senate.

These records
document the issues faced by the Office of the Senate of the Chicago
Undergraduate Division, the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, and the
University of Illinois at Chicago.
The Senate will discuss most issues that require input from the faculty. These records contain additional
background material that may not be found in the Senate minutes and agenda
documents.
