Administrative History

The College of Nursing's history begins in the early 1940s. At that time, nursing courses were offered at the University of Illinois at the request of hospitals. In 1949, an affiliate program between the University of Illinois and area hospital schools of nursing was established. The School of Nursing was designated as an autonomous unit of the University of Illinois in 1951. UIC became the first public institution in Illinois to offer the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and the first class of eight students graduated in 1957. In 1959, the School was renamed the College of Nursing.

The 1960s and 1970s were decades of expansion for the College of Nursing. Graduate degrees were added; in 1963, the College of Nursing admitted the first students to the new Master of Science in Nursing program. In 1974, UIC made the decision to offer a Ph.D. program in Nursing, becoming the first institution in Illinois to do so. The College of Nursing grew physically as well in these decades. In Chicago, a new building with larger capacity was begun in the late 1960s. In the 1970s, the College of Nursing expanded to the Peoria, Rockford, and Urbana campuses, then to the Quad Cites in 1980. The University of Illinois College of Nursing was named the first World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery in the U.S. in 1986.

The Department of Maternal-Child Nursing, the subject of this collection, offered one possible track for nursing students in the College. The Nurse-Midwifery Program was begun in 1972, led by the efforts of Lillian Runnerstom. This master's program was the first graduate program in midwifery in the country. When the Ph.D. program for nurses was approved, one of the possible specializations was maternal and midwifery nursing. Department faculty and Nurse-Midwifery program directors of note for the period covered here include Lillian Runnerstrom, Joyce Roberts, Diane Boyer, and Betty Schlatter.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists mainly of syllabi of courses offered in the Department of Maternal-Child Nursing from 1974 to 1994. The syllabi collected here may include material such as course schedules, class evaluations, reading lists, readings, practice tests, or outlines and diagrams relating to the course topic. Some other course materials, including course outlines and program information, are also included in the collection.
