Biographical Sketch

Adena Miller Rich (1888 -1967), born in Erie, Pennsylvania, attended Oberlin College, where she studied economics, sociology, and ethics. Because of her strong interest in sociology, Rich went on to obtain her graduate degree in Sociology from the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy. From there Rich began her career in social work as supervisor of visitors for the Immigrants' Protective League (IPL). In addition to working at the IPL, Rich volunteered for several settlement houses including Jane Addams' Hull House where she organized social and educational programs for immigrants and later became Jane Addams' secretary. Between 1914-1926 she lived intermittently at Hull House where she met her husband, Kenneth Rich, a stockbroker at the Board of Trade who taught arithmetic at Hull House. Kenneth Rich and Adena Miller were married in Pennsylvania in 1917. She gained the role of vice-president of the Illinois League of Women Voters between 1923 and 1926 and in 1926 became the director of the IPL. After Addams' death in 1935, Adena Miller Rich took over the position of head resident of Hull House. During her time at Hull House, Rich continued to work as Director of the IPL, volunteer for the Women League of Voters, and serve as a trustee of Oberlin College. In 1937, she resigned from the roll of Hull House Head Resident. She remained director of IPL and rally for the cause of social work until her retirement in 1954 to a farm in La Crosse, Indiana. Adena Miller Rich passed away on July 1, 1967 at the age of seventy-eight.
