Biographical Sketch

Alma Zola Groves served six Illinois attorneys general as assistant attorney general and was involved throughout her career in various professional women's organizations at the local, state and national levels. Before studying law she worked as assistant night editor of the Quincy Herald-Whig in Quincy, Illinois then later worked as secretary to the president of the Illinois State Bank in Quincy. As a legal secretary to Justice Lorne E. Murphy of the Illinois Supreme Court in Monmouth, Illinois Zola Groves began her legal studies. She was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1948. Her first appointment as Assistant Attorney General came from Attorney General Ivan A. Elliott. Groves then served under five other Attorneys General. Once established in her legal position Groves was active in a number of organizations. In the Illinois Federated Business and Professional Women's Club which she helped to organize she served as president. She also helped to organize the Metropolitan Business and Professional Women's Club of Chicago. She was also active in the Women's Bar Association of Illinois, the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs where she served as Membership Chair, the National Association of Women Lawyers where she served as Publicity Chair, and Zonta International. She also served on President Nixon's President's Committee on Traffic Safety. Additionally, she was involved in Friends of Literature where she served as both director and recording secretary and Women's Share in Public Service.

Scope and Contents

The A. Zola Groves Papers contain correspondence, bulletins, newsletters, news clippings, speeches, minutes, by-laws, budgets and financial records, resolutions, organizational histories, membership lists, conference materials, and notes. Some folders have been pulled out of original order where the order was apparently unintentional and unorganized. Organizational papers were sorted into series, but at the folder level, following the rule of original order, the papers have been left as theywere deposited. Although the collection is small, the lack of much personal information and extensive professional activity of Groves lent itself to topical series. Series I includes speeches, many undated, and various correspondence. The other six series each represent a specific organization Groves was active in as follows: Business and Professional Women's Clubs (Series II), Zonta International (Series III), Women's Share in Public Service (Series IV), Women's Bar Association of Illinois (Series V), National Association of Women Lawyers (Series VI), Friends of Literature (Series VII).
