Abstract:
Charles S. Bartholf was president and director of the Standard Diamond Drill Company, manufacturers of diamond-pointed prospecting core drills. He also became president and director of the American Mutual Plantation Company. The collection consists of one album of black and white photographs of European landmarks and landscapes visited between July 7, 1889 through August 21, 1889 with handwritten dates and notations by Charles S. Bartholf.

Biographical Sketch

Charles Stephen Bartholf was born in Plainfield, Illinois on September 25, 1857 to Gilliam and Mary (McCreery) Bartholf. He married Grace C. Bullock in Chicago in 1893. They had six children: Dorothy, Herbert Bullock, Winifred, Marjorie, Katharine, and Beatrice. Charles Bartholf graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in 1880. He went on to become a teacher and then later a principal in the Chicago public schools. In 1890, he became a manager and then later president and director of the Standard Diamond Drill Company, manufacturers of diamond-pointed prospecting core drills. He also became president and director of the American Mutual Plantation Company. Bartholf died on October 29, 1923.
